January 25th-February 3rd, 2018 – Join us for a 10-day retreat in beautiful Nicaragua! Sarah and Stephanie Starnes are excited to invite you to a 10-day retreat where we will share sacred and playful practices in yoga, self care, sound healing, slacklining, acro yoga, and more! A very secluded yoga retreat on a gorgeous beach with a dynamic team of teachers awaits you!

A conflux is a merging or a flowing together… of rivers or of people… join us for an adventure into the wild heart of Nature and into the one beating inside you! We will be staying at Costa Dulce (Escameca Ecolodge) in San Juan Del Sur, Nicaragua. This gorgeous retreat center will provide us with an intimate and secluded experience on an absolutely breathtaking beach (playa Escameca) where we will go deep into connecting with our personal practices, relax and enjoy the beauty of Nature in one of the most beautiful locations in central America. We will have delicious and healthy food... the center will prepare three delicious and healthy meals for us each day, a personal surf instructor (Adam Vukelich) to offer surf lessons for those who are interested a few times during the retreat, and potent teachings from two yoga teachers… sisters, Sarah and Stephanie Starnes! There will be daily meditations, asana practices, acrobatic yoga playtime, slacklining and bonfire ceremonies on the beach, plenty of time to relax and much more! We will be limiting this retreat to 35 people… and most of the lodging has a community feel to it (shared bedrooms and bathroom facilities) so that we can have the opportunity to embrace the beauty of true community connection with those who choose to join us. All levels of yoga experience are welcome… and since this is a retreat, you can attend as little or as many of the daily offerings as you would like… taking extra time off to relax or explore Nature whenever you desire. We will visit the town of San Juan Del Sur together one evening for some dancing and there are really great breaks nearby for any seasoned surfers who will be joining us. There will be one day in the middle of the retreat without any scheduled activities (except for the meals) so that you can have a day off or head out on any outside excursions you might like to explore (like a horseback ride along the beach, or to get a massage). There will also be a day of silence (with group activities planned). There are paths on the property for hiking and exploring, and you can journey along the sandy beach and over rocky shoreline for miles. There is a peaceful river that flows into the ocean on our beach for stand up paddle boarding, bird watching or fishing. The wildlife is abundant in this very untouched place in Nature with howler monkeys, humpback whales in the ocean, humming birds, vultures, hawks, and so much more… as well as a few sweet local dogs who love attention! Lodging options and pricing are below… this retreat will fill up fast… so please contact us soon if you would like to join us!

About the teachers:

Sarah grew up with meditation and chanting from a very early age (thanks to her mom) and began exploring a physical yoga practice when she was 12. She has been teaching yoga since 1999. Sarah has received certifications from Anusara Yoga and the White Lotus Foundation, and has been leading Yoga Teacher Trainings in Illinois since 2004. Her deep, passionate connection to the practice of yoga fuels her passion as a yoga teacher. Sarah is also a certified Reiki Adept Master Teacher and Nomena Healer through the Mystical Sciences Institute in Evanston, IL. She has taught yoga in the city and suburbs of Chicago, as well as in Hawaii, Costa Rica, Indonesia and Italy. Sarah’s teaching explores the energetic subtleties of a yoga practice, interwoven with optimal, anatomical alignment principles. The celebratory nature of her teaching style reflects her love for the practice and helps her students learn how to find the courage within to be themselves, while expanding their hearts to reveal the divine joy that is their deepest nature. Sarah brings a fun, blissful and compassionate energy to her classes, providing a safe, and empowering environment for students of all ages and levels of experience. She has extensive experience teaching pre/postnatal yoga, and has worked with many children and adults with special needs. Sarah’s other passions include handling and caring for raptors (birds of prey), essential oils, kirtan mantra and music, partner/acro yoga, aerial arts, Thai massage and other bodywork, tap dancing, pole dancing, hiking with her chihuahuas in the woody bush, rock climbing, horseback riding, traveling the world, writing songs and poetry, painting and exploring anything new to create, or learn and grow from.

Stephanie has studied the practices of yoga, health, and spirituality her entire life. Thanks to her mother, she was exposed to many different ways of taking care of the body and mind, and given the tools to overcome struggle and pain at a deep level. Stephanie believes in the goodness of people, the healing power of nature, and the importance of dreams. Her classes can be intense and challenging, yet always safe and mindful. She sees each student as a unique and beautiful expression of the divine, and welcomes anyone who simply wants to feel better and connect more to themselves and the life they desire to live.

Stephanie has been teaching yoga since 2004, and has had the pleasure of teaching all over Chicago, Southern IL, and for Wanderlust Festival in California and Chicago. She is now expanding her horizons and teaching internationally as well. Music is a large part of Stephanie’s life, and she loves to blend her musical passions with yoga. You can find her around town, at Bhakti Fest, or other festivals singing kirtan, electronic music, doing sound healings, or simply singing to you in Savasana.

With intense training in many styles of yoga, including Anusara and Acro, Stephanie’s classes are heart felt and dynamic, drawing from many years of study and practice. She thinks of yoga as her spiritual work, and hopes to help cultivate more beauty in the world through yoga and music. Join Stephanie in private and group classes throughout the city, or at monthly sound healings held throughout the Chicagoland area with her sister, Sarah.

What should I pack?

Below are most things we recommend:
Travel Yoga Mat
Natural Bug repellent (I love lavender oil and purification oil from young living for this)
Headlamp or flashlight
Alarm clock (not your cell phone!)
Earplugs (the howler monkeys can be quite loud early in the morning!)
Flip flops or sandals
Tennis shoes/Vibrams (for hiking, horseback riding or running, etc.)
Rash gard or fitted T-shirt for surfing
small English/Spanish dictionary
Sunscreen (45 proof or higher recommended)
Jar of coconut oil and aloe vera gel (in checked luggage) for soothing sun kissed skin
Sunglasses
twine/thin rope and clothes pins to hang clothes to dry
natural soap (like Dr. Bronners) to wash clothing items (or you can pay for laundry service if needed)
refillable Water bottle
Toiletries
Medication/healing medicine and ointments (If you are prone to motion sickness, be sure to bring enough for the whole week as even day trips will be a bit bumpy.)
Small backpack for day trips
Bathing suit(s) and cover ups
Comfortable light weight clothes (like shorts and tank tops to hang out in during the day, breathable long pants and long sleeve shirts to help keep mosquitos away in the evening)
For some excursions or for the evening you may need long pants, long sleeves or close toed shoes
An outfit to go salsa dancing/out to dinner one evening in town
Journal/notebook and pen
Yogi Toes or towel for your mat and a few hand towels for practicing
Handy wipes or hand sanitizer
Camera and iPod and chargers
Yoga/workout clothes (breathable and light... it gets hot there!)
Dry bag (because of the humidity your bathing suits may not be dry before departing)
Beach towel
Cell phone charge so fully charged when back in U.S.
Umbrella or light rain jacket (for afternoon showers)
A good book, magazines or word puzzle book (or two or three)
Snacks: you are welcome to have snacks, however, seal the food well in plastic because the ants usually find it! Also for immigration please do not bring nuts, seeds or fruit into the country.
Chocolate (it's hard to find good chocolate in Nicaragua!)

Should I bring US cash or convert money to Nicaraguan córdoba?

We recommend bringing US cash, however, the largest threat to tourists is theft, so please store your money in different areas on yourself or in your carry-on luggage. If you are taking part in the group transportation, this is not as much of a concern. Bring small bills... most little markets will take American dollars but will give you change in cordobas. Here is a link with info on entering and leaving Nicaragua: http://www.nicaragua-guide.com/enteringleaving-nicaragua.html

Will the meals be vegetarian?

We have requested healthy meals with vegetarian/gluten free options, egg options at breakfast and Fish/seafood/chicken options at dinner. If you have specific dietary needs or allergies, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate your needs. All three meals per day (just one meal on arrival and departure days) are included in your retreat package.

Is it okay to sign up by myself?

Absolutely! You can reserve your own room, or we can assign you a roommate if you would like to share a room as long as we have other guests (females will share with females and males with males) also requesting a roommate. You will be able to enjoy as much private time or social time as you like!

Is it okay to sign up with my spouse/partner/friend?

Definitely! This retreat is a great opportunity to reconnect with a spouse/partner/friend away from your busy schedules. You also get a built-in roommate this way! If there are more than two of you, contact us for lodging options.

What type of yoga classes will be offered?

A variety of classes will be offered throughout the week. We will most likely have 2 classes per day... some challenging, some basic/relaxing... with a day off mid week for free time. There will be some meditation, pranayama, sound healing and acrobatic yoga practice during the week as well!

How much yoga will we practice? Do I have to attend every class?

This is a retreat, not a training... so you can attend any of the classes you wish, but you can also skip any classes you want. All of our activities are optional. Most days will have 2 yoga classes, depending on how long certain outings may take.

Is there Internet access? Can I use my cell phone?

There will be wifi but you cannot rely on it working all of the time. Most cell phones will not work unless you have an international cell plan. If they do work, they will have fees associated with making and taking calls/text messages, so please check with your carrier.

What contact information can I give my family in case of an emergency?

Here is the retreat center’s facebook page: www.facebook.com/Costa.Dulce.Beachfront.Retreat

and website: http://www.escamecabb.com/

What time zone is Nicaragua?

Nicaragua is observing Central Standard time.

How old do you have to be to attend this retreat?

We ask that all of our guests are at least 14 years old. If a guardian wishes to bring a guest who is under 14 years of age, please contact us to discuss this as an option.
